Tales from Mexico!

I have been an absolutely terrible blogger lately! I have neglected my little pet project for over a month. I have been working so much and the holidays are so busy, so at the last minute my husband and I decided to take an impromptu trip to Mexico. We really wanted to just relax and lay out all day, I didn’t leave the resort at all except to go to the airport! This is the diary of our non adventures in Mexico!

We mostly laid on the beach or by the pool everyday, my husband would normally wake up earlier than me, go down for coffee and for a walk on the beach, then we would head down early morning to get chairs. Our resort was only half full though so we didn’t have any trouble. We were also out of the hotel zone so I think that made it feel a lot less busy. I brought 8 different bathing suits, it was basically a parade of bikinis.

Hat: The Hatter Company

We were in Mazatlan and we stayed at the Riu Emerald Bay. I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite hotel but it had a really nice beach and the best part was that it was the last building on an inlet, when you got to the end it was high rocks. This rocked in area is called Playa Bruja and if you’re brave enough to climb over you are rewarded with a secluded beach that is basically private and was completely empty every time we went.

It was our absolute favourite part of the whole trip and we walked down almost every day. We would either go over to the beach area or sit on the rocks and watch the surfers while Ryan smoked a cigar.

Tank Top: Victoria’s Secret (I loved this top and wish I had got it in many more colours. My summer uniform is jean shorts and a loosey tank top and these are perfect.)

Shorts: American Eagle (I know these shorts are very Britney Spears circa 2008, but I don’t care, they are so comfortable and extra short!)

Tank Top: American Apparel

Headband: This headband doesn’t have a label but my girlfriend Erin bought it at the Sculpt Barre studio in Sherwood Park and I think it’s so cute.

I’d say the biggest disappointment with the hotel was the restaurants. With an all inclusive I know you have to keep your expectations low, and the actual buffet was pretty good. Lots of fresh fruit, a salad bar and different cereals for breakfast. It was the a la carte’s that were so disappointing. There were supposed to be three, and the Mexican was the best of the those slim pickings. This is us on Mexican restaurant night.

This was my favourite outfit of the trip, I’m such a cheapy when I buy vacation clothes, I know I may not ever wear it again.

Tank Top: H&M

Skirt: Ardene (!?!?!!)

Shoes: Aldo, old but similar here that I plan to buy this spring

The other two restaurants were supposed to be “Asian” and “Italian,” which ended up being buffets parading as theme nights. You weren’t served and there was no music or ambiance, it was like being in a cafeteria. This is me annoyed at the “Italian,”  in one of my favourite striped jersey dresses from Jacob, which is very old but a similar one here.

We also went to go look at these beautiful vacation condos that were a few buildings down from our hotel. Great floor to ceiling views and three immaculate pools with great views. It was called the Peninsula Mazatlan. I don’t think we would ever be interested in buying property in Mexico, ultimately we would like a vacation home in Florida, but we love to look, get ideas and dream!

I live for maxi dresses! I want to buy a hundred more this summer. This is an old one from H&M.

Hat: GAP (old), similar here

It looks like I was on a major black and white stripe kick on this trip, I do like a good stripe to be honest. So French, so nautical! Really the best part of the trip was just relaxing and spending time together. We didn’t go out or booze, it wasn’t really that kind of trip, I read 6 books while I was there.

Me Before You – Jojo Moyes

Here I Go Again – Jen Lancaster

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened – Jenny Lawson

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – JK Rowling

The Longest Date: Life as a Wife – Cindy Chupack

The Paris Wife – Paula McLain

I’d say my favourites were Me Before You and The Paris Wife, but they were all really enjoyable. EXCEPT, right before I left for the trip I was walking through Save On Foods and wanted to grab one more book because I knew I would probably read a lot and I grabbed one that looked cute and I skimmed the back cover and it looked ok. I left it until the end of the trip because when I really looked at it I realized it was a Harlequin Romance novel! We weren’t able to sit together on the plane and I was bored so I started reading…..and it is not good. The writing is at an extremely low level and the story is just stupid, it took me about 40 minutes to read 170 pages. Yikes.
