New Life, New Love

It’s been 5 whole months since I’ve updated this blog because I now have a 5 month old baby! What a major life change! Everyone says it’s the hardest but most rewarding thing you will ever do, and as cliche as it is, it’s true! I’ve never been more exhausted in my life while feeling my heart so full at the same time. This is our Rockwell Don at 5 months old!

He is so smiley, he loves to play and giggle and have his naked time (I swear he’ll be a nudist when he grows up)! He was 10 days overdue and I had to be induced because he just had no interest in coming out, he hadn’t dropped, no dilation – he was at home sweet home in there! Those last couple weeks I was totally miserable! So big, so uncomfortable, so irritable – just a real pleasure to be around!

He was finally born on November 14, 2016 after 11 hours of labour and 25 minutes of pushing (not bad!) at 8lbs 10oz and 21 inches. He was strong and healthy with ten fingers, ten toes, two eyes and a nose as my husband would say! The first couple nights home were a real challenge, I was not prepared for the constant waking, but he was overall a great sleeper and eater.

I am an enormous control freak and love a good schedule and routine, the first three months were probably the hardest of my life. You can plan and organize all you want but  ultimately your baby is going to do what they want in those early days. I shed lots of tears but also lots of smiles!

He’s experienced a lot of firsts these last few months, 1st Christmas, plane ride, Easter, laugh, first trip to the driving range, bath, swimming lesson and the list goes on and on!

First shots (more upsetting for me than him!), first Valentine’s Day, first purees, first roll overs and first toys. We love going for walks when it’s nice out, swimming, meeting friends for coffee and having breakfast together as a family.

I’d say our biggest challenge has been naps, god damn it those naps! He’s a social boy and doesn’t seem to want to miss out so getting long naps out of him has been a major struggle, naps are my everest and I will conquer them! Although there is so much advice and information out there, there is also a ton of judgement and ideas that may not work for my baby and my family. Realizing that not one size fits all babies is hard for me, if I work at something I expect it to start working for me too! Some days I feel so frustrated and drained but then Rockwell will see me and smile and it makes it all worth it. It’s so nice to have friends having babies at the same time who can commiserate or come up with new ideas and plans, support is so vital! It’s crazy to me that he is 5 months already and he has changed so much. I have to remind myself to enjoy all these baby times and milestones because one day I’ll wake up and he’ll be in junior high and way too cool for me!

Back from the Dead!

I know this is so overdue, it’s now late November and this is a Halloween post but I couldn’t let all the fun of our annual halloween party sneak by without detailing some highlights right here.

Come one, come all!

Details… spooky and fun!

I loved these vases, I just got some cheap vases of different sizes at the dollar store and filled them with halloween candy, some black roses and some black sticks with skeletons.

cookie

How cute are these spider cookies?! They are just peanut butter cookies and as soon as you take them out of the oven you press the back of a teaspoon on the top to make a little divot.  Once they are completely cool I used a drop of melted chocolate as glue and stuck a mini peanut butter cup on top as the body, then piped the legs with melted chocolate. I also stuck the eyes on with melted chocolate, the eyes you can get at bulk barn and Michaels. I love them, I think they turned out so well.

My other favourites were these jalapeño popper mummies, aren’t they adorable?! They are easy but time consuming. I mixed cream cheese, jalapeño jack cheese and chopped green onion and filled jalapeños that I cut in half length wise.  I stretched out pillsbury crescent rolls into rectangles and sliced long strips and wrapped the pepper leaving a space for the candy eyes. I brushed with an egg mixture and baked for ten minutes, then pop the eyes in after they’re baked. You can find a really good step by step recipe here http://www.thehopelesshousewife.com

I was hoping this veggie platter would look like a candy corn but only a couple people I asked could identify that!

That was an ice hand in the punch bowl, that punch would come back to haunt me the next day.

details4

How awesome is this dip? My friend Hollie brought it and I thought it was so well done. My girlfriend Erin also made cheese bread bones that were delicious but once they were baked and expanded they looked more like penises than bones!

Costumes

Scarecrow and crow. I am just obsessed with that headpiece Ryan wore, he was such a good sport about it – he was basically just covered in feathers. I took a ball cap and built the beak out of bristol board and then wrapped the head around and around and around with black feather boas.

costumes8

Mr. Monopoly and a sugar skull.

costumes9

Beyonce!

costumes4

Elliot! This was my absolute favourite costume of the night.

costumes3

Marty McFly, I wish I had a full body pic because the costume was bang on.

costumes6

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

costumes10

Garth was kicking around somewhere too, Hollie and her husband were identity thieves which was actually quite creative, they went from person to person and after talking to them would take their names and stick them all over their hoodies.

Things were starting to get a little messy at this point!

costumes11

Erin was the Lion King, Lisa was Snow White.

terrifying!!!

There were so many creative costumes, I love seeing what people come up with.

Ryan’s birthday was the week before and it was pretty low key and just the two of us went to dinner, he didn’t do anything with his friends. I decided to have a custom cake made and gave it to him at the party when all his friends were there too. It was amazing!!! The girl who makes them is so so good, her cakes are so creative and really well done. I just told her some things he likes and that I wanted to incorporate and she just went to town. I was so so happy with it.

I love this photo of me giving the cake to him, good paparazzi skills guys!

The next day I was not in a good way, I only left the house to pick up the dog. Then I laid on the couch until 4:30, threw up three times and then ate a pizza. Classy! I was glad I felt better in time to hand out candy though. Ryan was feeling ok the next day and him and his friend decided to go out. When I cleaned up from the party I threw out everything including his costume (he was not thrilled), so we threw together a last minute costume to go with his friend Dave’s existing costume.

costumes

Jughead and Archie! I know the shirt with the S looks pretty thrown together but I just love the costume, we stole the crown from Erin’s lion king costume and then just took things from the closet and had a Jughead look ready to go!

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween!

Potter Shower!

2014 139

I love Harry Potter as much as the next guy, I’ve read all the books, seen all the movies and been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. But no one, NO ONE, loves Harry Potter as much as my friend Lindsy. She can find a way to bring a spell, character or Hogwarts anecdote into any conversation. I ended up being the one to host the baby shower for her second son so I had to do a Harry Potter baby shower. It took a little bit of creativity, some research and help from friends to make what I thought was an epic baby shower!

I started by asking everyone who was attending to wear their house colours (ie. blue and gold for Ravenclaw, silver and green for Slytherin, black and yellow for Hufflepuff and or course scarlet and gold for Gryffindor), it was a good way to get people in the Potter mood!

houses

Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, Godric Gryffindor and the boy who lived!

A hugely important part of the shower was the food, so many treats! It had to obviously be all Potter related, whether that meant inspired by or directly from the wizarding world.

Once the food was all decided on I needed to have lots of Hogwarts and Harry Potter themed decor.

The sorting hat!!!!

We made a bunch of these posters with pictures of the guests as babies, and Lindsy had to guess who each one was, thanks to Erin for all her hard work on these! I also made up a Harry Potter quiz of 20 questions Lindsy had to answer before getting to open any gifts. We also played that game where you hum a song and the group has to guess it. All the songs either had the word “baby” in the title or were songs you could make babies to! For example Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On!

It was fun to get creative with this shower, I love a good theme party and I think Lindsy had a lot of fun, and her new baby definitely got spoiled!
